A 21-year-old man with HIV is seen in clinic for evaluation of a painful boil on his left lower back region, just above the left buttocks (Figure 1). He has had two similar episodes within the past year. An incision and drainage of the abscess is performed, and culture of the exudative material grows methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
